Watertight Sealing Solutions For Dry Dock Construction, Gate And Integrated Systems.
Dry dock gates come in various configurations, dimensions and operating principles. Every dry dock gate is unique in its own way, therefore a custom engineered seal is required to ensure a drop tight sealing solution. A watertight sealing design has to account with the following parameters:
A seal that is not tailor-made will sooner or later result in leakage and require auxiliary pumps. Properly engineered dry dock seals have the benefit of faster emptying cycles without the use of auxiliary pumps or expensive and high maintenance pre-compression enhancers. Dry docks can encompass multiple differing sealing challenges, requiring flexible sealing solutions:
Watertight Sealing Solutions For Dry Dock Construction, Gate And Integrated Systems.
Dry docks can differ widely in configuration, geometry, closure path, closure mechanism, movement and load distribution, resulting in the need for distinct sealing solutions for each gate type.
The Radial Dry Dock Gate closes the dry dock by rotating into three possible positions; open, close and maintenance mode. Due to this radial movement a combination of bottom and vertical sealings is necessary to ensure watertightness.
The Sliding Dry Dock Gate opens and closes through a sliding movement at the front of the dry dock. Depending on the location and configuration of the sealing method, the sealing has to be designed to cope with high compression loads, shear loads and relatively high friction forces working on the seals.
The Miter Dry Dock Gate consists of two gates which open and close from a fixed rotational position which closes off in a triangular configuration. The sealing mechanism can be designed according to multiple sealing principles, depending on the configuration and the load distribution on the sealings. Watertightness is achieved by implementing compression or self-activating lip seals.
The Floating Caisson Dry Dock Gate is operated by inserting water into the caisson and towing it to the desired position. Depending on its geometry, the gate is made from steel or concrete. The floating caisson dry dock gate can vary in size from tens of meters to even a few hundreds meters long. The sealing mechanism depends on the dry dock front structure, the operation principle and the gate design.
The Self Propelled Dry Dock Gate has the same working principle as the Floating Caisson Dry Dock Gate, but is often smaller in scale. Contrary to the Floating Caisson Dry Dock gate, this type of gate has an an integrated propulsion system on board which is also used to operate the gate itself.
Modular Dry Dock Gates consist of different steel sections forming the dry dock gate. The sealings between the modular systems must fit accurately onto the steel sections, forming a continuous sealing line. Modular dry dock gates require a sealing gasket per section, taking the weight per section into account. When it comes to modular dry dock solutions, watertightness must be achieved over the complete height and width of the gate.
