Custom Engineered Sealing Solutions For Lock & Gate Systems.
The rising sea levels, increasing global population and climate change impacts ship navigation, water management and defense. This has led to an increase in the use of lock & gate systems across the globe.
Lock and gate systems require an engineered sealing system that meet today’s tight sealing regulations, ensuring prompt emptying cycles and mitigation of hydrodynamic vibrations due to leakage.
The sealing design has an important impact on the structural wear and fatigue of the drive system. When the sealing system is not properly designed, for example if the sealing system vibrates due to water flow, this vibration may enhance resonance within the hydraulic structure, leading to fatigue or serious wear on steel and concrete. This results in huge cost impacts regarding re-design, downtime and repair.
Lock & Gate sealing are prone to design challenges such as complex movements, different load distributions, high wear environment and tight sealing requirements. GSC is experienced in designing all types of watertight Lock & Gate sealing systems within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment, ensuring timely and smooth design integration within the broader project.
Custom Engineered Sealing Solutions For Lock & Gate Systems
There are different types of water barriers and lock systems for hydraulic projects. Each type of barrier has a different configuration, geometry, closure mechanism, movement, closure path, load distribution requiring different sealing techniques.
The Radial Gate operates by rotating into three possible positions; open, close and maintenance mode. Due to this radial movement a combination of bottom and vertical sealings is necessary to ensure watertightness.
The Sliding Gate opens and closes through a sliding movement. Depending on the location and configuration of the sealing method, the sealing has to be designed to cope with high compression loads, shear loads and relatively high friction forces working on the seals.
The Miter Gate consists of two gates which open and close from a fixed rotational position that closes off in a triangular configuration. The sealing mechanism can be designed according to multiple sealing principles, depending on the configuration and the load distribution on the sealings. Watertightness is achieved by implementing compression or self-activating lip seals.
The Vertical Lifting Gate opens and closes through vertical movement of the gate. The self weight of the gates can be used to ensure watertightness at the base. The vertical sides of the gates can be sealed by self-activating lipseals.
Sector Gates rotate from an inland recess towards the the body of water. This configuration delivers the widest possible opening range. Depending on the operating mechanism the sealings often consist of two or three different sealing techniques.
The Visor Gate is essentially a dynamic arched dam which is used to hold sufficient water level, ensuring safe navigation. The preferred sealing option is a compression seal. In most cases the visor gate has sufficient self weight to enable watertightness.
