UNDERGROUND INFRASTRUCTURE SEALING

UNDERGROUND SEALING

Underground constructions can have widely different applications, all with different dimensions, configurations and sealing needs. These structures are mainly static and used for transportation, storage, parking, water management and energy facilities.

The design of junctions or merged parts of underground constructions require flexible engineered solutions to protect the integrity and functioning of the structure. Underground constructions are prone to small movements, temperature related expansion and contraction, soil mechanics and settlements over their lifetime.

Reliable engineered sealing technology and water tightness are of great importance. In underground construction, each drop of leakage is a drop too much. The sealing system and its functionality are essential for the proper functioning of underground structures.

LIFE TIME SEALING

3 LAYERED MECHANISM

In comparison to ground level construction, underground constructions may also have the presence of soil in combination with water. Surrounding vibrations due to traffic can cause the soil to be compacted and gradually exert higher pressures on the structure and the sealing mechanism over time. For these reason, our underground construction advice consists of a 3 layered sealing mechanism.

  1. Preventing soil ingress in the sealing joint.
  2. Primary sealing engineered to cope with the hydrostatic pressures, movements, expansion and possible settlements.
  3. Redundancy sealing to act as backup should the primary sealing become disfunctional for any reason.

UNDERGROUND SEALING

There are different types of underground structures, each having a different purpose, configuration, geometry and load distribution, thereby requiring different sealing techniques.

TUNNELED TRANSPORTATION

A tunnel can be a cut and cover construction, a bored construction, or a submerged construction. These structure require a sealing solution at consecutive elements, junctions and merged parts. Each type of tunnel construction requires a completely different sealing approach and sealing technique, yet all require a combination of compression and membrane type sealing to ensure watertightness. In each case, redundancy is of great importance.

ENERGY FACILITIES

Hydroelectric Power Plants, sewage systems or bypass systems are, in essence, a reversed tunnel construction. This requires a reversed sealing system compared to dry tunnels. Since there is no human traffic, a single or two layered sealing system is sufficient. An engineered membrane type of sealing is required to ensure watertightness over the lifetime of the tunnel.

GARAGES

Due to limited space in urban areas, there is an increase in the development of underground garages and basements. These garages consist of many different joints which all require sealing. These joints must remain flexible to cope with movements and pressures. A casting sealing system is the preferred solution to ensure watertightness.

STORAGE & WAREHOUSING

Underground storage & warehouses, cold storage and reservoirs are in essence a combination of a tunnel and garage system. A combination of casting and external membrane type sealing systems are required to ensure watertightness.
